Weaving Workshop

This week’s weaving workshop was one of our most successful sessions so far. The energy in the room was full of curiosity and creativity, and the outcomes people produced were honestly amazing.

We began the day by looking at a selection of woven samples for inspiration. There was a wide variety of textures, colours, and patterns to explore, and it didn’t take long before the group was swapping ideas and talking through how different materials behave when woven. It was great to see participants making connections with techniques they’d tried in previous workshops, like felting anf tufting, and thinking about how those processes made them feel. Comparing surfaces sparked conversations about tactility, and how important texture and touch are to our emotional experience of a material.

Once we got started on the looms, a few people found it a bit tricky to manage the tension or get the first few rows to sit right. But, as always, the group was amazing at helping each other through it. There was so much shared knowledge, encouragement, and a really supportive atmosphere that helped everyone relax and find their own way of doing things.

People really started to make the process their own. Some went for bold colours, others kept things minimal or played with texture. A few brought in thicker yarns and felt strips to create texture which led to some interesting experiments. It was great to see everyone exploring and not worrying too much about the outcome.

We finished by laying everything out and chatting through what worked, what didn't, and what people might try next. Seeing all the pieces together really highlighted how many different directions the same starting point can go in. Overall, it was a very creative and collaborative workshop and I'm looking forward to seeing how things develop next time.
